Overview
Exposed aggregate is the most popular premium driveway finish in Perth, and with good reason. The pebble surface provides grip without being harsh, holds its appearance for decades, and looks substantially better than plain broomed concrete from day one.
The finish is created by washing the cement paste from the surface while the concrete is still green, revealing the decorative aggregate below. The result is fully dependent on two things: the aggregate blend you select and the timing of the wash.
We have been doing exposed aggregate work in Perth for 30 years. Below is what you need to know about stone selection for the Perth environment, how the job works, what it costs, and how to maintain it properly.

What to watch for
After 30+ years on the tools, here's the stuff we wish every client knew before they signed a quote.
Worth knowing
Exposed aggregate concrete is a decorative surface finish where the cement paste is washed from the surface of fresh concrete, revealing the stone aggregate below. The exposed stones provide grip, visual texture and colour. It is used on driveways, pool surrounds and paths across Perth. Sealed with penetrating sealer, it is low-maintenance and durable.
Watch out
In summer heat above 35 degrees, concrete sets faster and the wash window can shrink from 8 hours to 4 hours. Get it wrong and the paste will not wash off cleanly, you end up with a patchy surface. We adjust mix design and schedule summer pours accordingly.
Worth knowing
Exposed aggregate quality varies significantly between concreters. Ask to see photos, or better, a drive-past address, of two jobs done in the last 6 months. The surface should show consistent exposure depth, even stone distribution and clean edges without chipping.
From the crew
“The stone selection conversation takes 10 minutes and affects what your driveway looks like for the next 25 years. Do not skip it.”
