Overview

Decorative pebble-finish driveways and pool surrounds.

Exposed aggregate is the most popular premium driveway finish in Perth, and with good reason. The pebble surface provides grip without being harsh, holds its appearance for decades, and looks substantially better than plain broomed concrete from day one.

The finish is created by washing the cement paste from the surface while the concrete is still green, revealing the decorative aggregate below. The result is fully dependent on two things: the aggregate blend you select and the timing of the wash.

We have been doing exposed aggregate work in Perth for 30 years. Below is what you need to know about stone selection for the Perth environment, how the job works, what it costs, and how to maintain it properly.

How we do it

Our exposed aggregate concrete process.

Every job follows the same steps so nothing gets missed. From site visit through to handover, here's what to expect.

  1. Step 01

Formwork and sub-base (same as standard driveway)

The foundation work is identical, forms, compaction, moisture barrier, reinforcement. No shortcuts here regardless of the finish type.

  2. Step 02

Concrete pour with specified aggregate mix

The pre-mixed concrete with your chosen aggregate blend arrives by truck. It is placed, vibrated and screeded level.

  3. Step 03

    Surface retarder application

A chemical retarder is sprayed or brushed evenly across the surface before initial set. This slows the top layer from hardening while the bulk continues to cure.

  4. Step 04

    Protective covering

Polythene sheeting covers the surface to prevent premature drying of the retarder layer and protect from rain or direct sun.

  5. Step 05

    The wash

At the correct exposure window, typically 4 to 8 hours depending on temperature and mix design, the retarded paste is pressure-washed from the surface. This is the critical step where experience matters most.

  6. Step 06

    Cure and seal

The surface cures for a minimum of 7 days before a penetrating sealer is applied. The sealer locks in the aggregate, enhances colour depth and provides protection against staining and UV.

What to watch for

Things most concreters won't tell you.

After 30+ years on the tools, here's the stuff we wish every client knew before they signed a quote.

Worth knowing

Featured answer: what is exposed aggregate concrete?

Exposed aggregate concrete is a decorative surface finish where the cement paste is washed from the surface of fresh concrete, revealing the stone aggregate below. The exposed stones provide grip, visual texture and colour. It is used on driveways, pool surrounds and paths across Perth. Sealed with penetrating sealer, it is low-maintenance and durable.

Watch out

Why Perth summer timing matters even more with exposed aggregate

In summer heat above 35 degrees, concrete sets faster and the wash window can shrink from 8 hours to 4 hours. Get it wrong and the paste will not wash off cleanly, you end up with a patchy surface. We adjust mix design and schedule summer pours accordingly.

Worth knowing

Ask to see recent Perth jobs

Exposed aggregate quality varies significantly between concreters. Ask to see photos, or better, a drive-past address, of two jobs done in the last 6 months. The surface should show consistent exposure depth, even stone distribution and clean edges without chipping.

What's included

Every exposed aggregate concrete job includes:

This is what comes as standard on every quote. No surprises, no upsells halfway through the pour.

Read: Exposed aggregate vs plain concrete
  • Can I see the aggregate sample board before committing? (colour varies lot to lot)
  • What retarder strength and brand are you using? (affects exposure depth consistency)
  • When do you schedule the wash for Perth summer conditions?
  • Is sealer included in the quote price?
  • Do you cut saw-joints, or apply retarder only at joint lines? (both are valid, just be specific)
  • What is your mix design, 25 MPa or 32 MPa? (32 MPa gives better stone bond)
