Overview
Decorative and stamped concrete uses rubber stamps pressed into freshly placed concrete to create patterns that resemble natural stone, slate, cobblestone, timber or brick. Done well, it is a cost-effective way to achieve the look of expensive materials with the durability and low maintenance of concrete.
Stamped concrete is more technically demanding than plain or exposed aggregate work. The stamps need to be applied at exactly the right time, too early and the pattern blurs in soft concrete; too late and the surface is too hard to take an impression.
We have been doing decorative concrete in Perth for 30 years and have seen plenty of stamped jobs done poorly, patterns that blurred, colour that faded, releases that were not cleaned off properly. Below is what goes into doing it correctly.

What to watch for
After 30+ years on the tools, here's the stuff we wish every client knew before they signed a quote.
Pro tip
The best stamp-and-colour combination is one that complements the brickwork, render or cladding on your house. When we quote, we look at the home exterior to advise on colour and pattern. If you have reference photos of finishes you like, bring them.
Watch out
Stamped concrete with an acrylic sealer looks spectacular when first done. The sealer wears from foot traffic and UV over 2 to 3 years. Resealing is a half-day job, much cheaper than watching the colour fade and the stamp detail dull out. We tell every client before handover: reseal at 2 to 3 years.
Worth knowing
Stamped concrete colours look very different on a computer screen vs a physical sample under Perth sunlight. We always prepare a sample board with your chosen pattern, base colour and release agent so you see exactly what you are getting before we form up.
From the crew
“Stamped concrete gives you the stone look without the stone price. The catch is the reseal interval, skip it and the finish deteriorates faster than it should.”
