Overview

Slate, cobblestone and timber-look patterned concrete.

Decorative and stamped concrete uses rubber stamps pressed into freshly placed concrete to create patterns that resemble natural stone, slate, cobblestone, timber or brick. Done well, it is a cost-effective way to achieve the look of expensive materials with the durability and low maintenance of concrete.

Stamped concrete is more technically demanding than plain or exposed aggregate work. The stamps need to be applied at exactly the right time, too early and the pattern blurs in soft concrete; too late and the surface is too hard to take an impression.

We have been doing decorative concrete in Perth for 30 years and have seen plenty of stamped jobs done poorly, patterns that blurred, colour that faded, releases that were not cleaned off properly. Below is what goes into doing it correctly.

How we do it

Our decorative & stamped concrete process.

Every job follows the same steps so nothing gets missed. From site visit through to handover, here's what to expect.

  1. Step 01

Formwork and sub-base, same as any slab

Standard preparation: forms, compaction, moisture barrier, reinforcement. The foundation needs to be right regardless of the surface finish.

  2. Step 02

    Integral colour mixing

Dry or liquid colour oxide is added to the concrete batch at the plant (integral colour runs through the full slab depth). Colour is double-checked on a sample board before the truck arrives.

  3. Step 03

    Pour and screed

Concrete is placed and screeded level, then floated to a consistent surface. Any aggregate or voids need to be resolved before stamping.

  4. Step 04

    Release agent application

A contrasting colour powder release agent is broadcast across the surface before stamping. This fills the stamp textures and creates the variation that makes stamped concrete look more like real stone.

  5. Step 05

    Stamping

Heavy rubber stamps are placed and pressed into the surface systematically, matching the pattern at joints. This is a two-person minimum job. Timing is critical, we test the surface firmness constantly.

  6. Step 06

    Edge and detail work

Hand tools are used to extend patterns into areas the large stamps cannot reach: against walls, around posts, in tight corners.

  7. Step 07

    Wash and seal

After initial cure, the release powder is washed off with water, revealing the colour contrast. Once fully cured, a protective sealer is applied, typically an acrylic sealer that enhances the colour depth and protects the surface.

What to watch for

Things most concreters won't tell you.

After 30+ years on the tools, here's the stuff we wish every client knew before they signed a quote.

Pro tip

Bring a photo of your home exterior

The best stamp-and-colour combination is one that complements the brickwork, render or cladding on your house. When we quote, we look at the home exterior to advise on colour and pattern. If you have reference photos of finishes you like, bring them.

Watch out

Sealer reapplication is not optional

Stamped concrete with an acrylic sealer looks spectacular when first done. The sealer wears from foot traffic and UV over 2 to 3 years. Resealing is a half-day job, much cheaper than watching the colour fade and the stamp detail dull out. We tell every client before handover: reseal at 2 to 3 years.

Worth knowing

See the sample board before you decide

Stamped concrete colours look very different on a computer screen vs a physical sample under Perth sunlight. We always prepare a sample board with your chosen pattern, base colour and release agent so you see exactly what you are getting before we form up.

From the crew

Stamped concrete gives you the stone look without the stone price. The catch is the reseal interval, skip it and the finish deteriorates faster than it should.

The difference

What sets a good decorative & stamped concrete job apart.

Stamped Concrete

  • No grout lines, nowhere for weeds or ants to grow
  • Lower initial cost for large areas
  • More pattern and colour flexibility
  • Needs periodic resealing (every 2 to 3 years)
  • Cracks can be repaired but hard to match perfectly

Pavers

  • ×Individual pavers can be lifted and replaced exactly
  • ×No sealing required (generally)
  • ×Subsidence causes pavers to shift, rebed needed
  • ×Grout lines attract weeds and require maintenance
  • ×Higher cost per square metre for quality pavers

What's included

Every decorative & stamped concrete job includes:

This is what comes as standard on every quote. No surprises, no upsells halfway through the pour.
