Overview

Shed, garage, patio and granny-flat slab specialists.

Concrete slabs sit under almost every structure on a residential block, sheds, garages, patios, granny flats, al fresco areas. They are not glamorous, but get one wrong and everything built on top of it pays the price.

In Perth, the combination of sandy soils, reactive clay pockets in the Hills and a very active termite environment means slab design is not a one-size solution. What works in Joondalup on deep sand does not necessarily work in Roleystone on clay.

We pour concrete slabs across the full Perth metro and have done for 30 years. Below is a plain-language breakdown of what goes into a slab job, how they are priced, and what questions to ask any concreter you are considering.

How we do it

Our concrete slabs process.

Every job follows the same steps so nothing gets missed. From site visit through to handover, here's what to expect.

  1. Step 01

    Site survey and level

We laser-level the site, confirm drainage falls, and identify any services (gas, water, comms) that need protection during sub-base excavation.

  2. Step 02

    Sub-base excavation and compaction

Excess material is removed to achieve design depth. Sub-base is compacted in 100mm layers using a plate compactor. Compaction testing is available on request for engineer-specified slabs.

  3. Step 03

    Formwork and edge setup

Timber or steel forms are set to line and level. Edge depths are checked against the design, thickening at perimeter edges is done at this stage.

  4. Step 04

    Barrier and reinforcement placement

Moisture barrier (polythene sheet, minimum 0.2mm) is laid across the base, lapped at joints. Mesh or reo bar goes in on plastic chairs at the specified cover depth.

  5. Step 05

    Pour, vibrate and screed

Concrete is placed, vibrated to consolidate around reinforcement and remove air voids, then struck off level with a screed rail. A bull-float smooths the surface before finishing.

  6. Step 06

    Power trowel or hand finish

Garage and shed slabs are often power-trowelled to a hard, smooth surface that resists oil and traffic. Outdoor patio slabs are more typically hand-floated for a softer, non-slip texture.

  7. Step 07

    Cure and seal

A curing compound or wet hessian keeps moisture in during the critical first 7 days. Sealer is applied after full cure for slabs that require oil or stain resistance.

What to watch for

Things most concreters won't tell you.

After 30+ years on the tools, here's the stuff we wish every client knew before they signed a quote.

Worth knowing

Termite protection is mandatory in WA

Under the National Construction Code and WA Building Regulations, most new slabs require a termite management system. Options include physical termite barriers installed before pour, or chemical treatment. We coordinate with your building certifier to confirm requirements before we form up.

Watch out

Get a soil test on reactive clay sites

If you are building a granny flat or sleepout on a Hills block, an engineer-specified slab is not optional, it is what your building certifier will require. We work regularly with local structural engineers and can put you in contact if needed.

From the crew

Concrete is not a small spend, get it done properly the first time. A slab that fails means pulling down whatever is built on top of it, then starting again.

What's included

Every concrete slabs job includes:

This is what comes as standard on every quote. No surprises, no upsells halfway through the pour.

Read: Shed slab prep in Perth, walk-through
  • Steel cover depth, chairs must hold mesh at correct depth, not resting on the barrier
  • Expansion joint placement, not just where it looks neat, but where shrinkage stress concentrates
  • Drainage fall direction, 1:100 minimum away from any structure, toward an outlet
  • Termite barrier continuity, any penetration through the barrier must be sealed
  • Curing time before load, 28 days for full strength, 7 days minimum before foot traffic
  • Sealer specification, a garage floor unsealed will absorb oil and stain permanently
